Notes from a parish cat and his author Julie Mackenzie

My photo
I am Father Tom Fish, esteemed member of the religious team at Temptation of Christ Parish in the novels by author Julie Mackenzie. As to my background, I was invited into the rectory as a stray, laid on the charm, and was invited to stay, even honorarily ordained and no less spiritual than my sidekick Father Will. He dotes on me to high heaven and forgives all of my street cat proclivities, whatever the hell that means.

Hearts, Presidents, and Lent

 Hi, friends!

What an unusual string of holidays!

It was Valentine's Day yesterday, today is Presidents Day and tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday to kick off Lent..Can I say "kick off" or is that sacrilegious?

Anyway, let's tip our hats to romance, history, and...and...FEVVERS!!!!..hehe!!

Happy Mardi Gras!

Soft Flannel and Nip Dreams

Hi, again, friends!

Okay - so the groundhog gets beaten up every year when he comes up with a prediction we don't like. I heard he predicted six more weeks of winter. Gee, ya think? It's February! I do have a question, though: What about in the southern hemisphere, does it mean they have six more weeks of summer? I don't think a hoggie has weighed in from down under, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, just some mewsings from yours truly with nothing better to do than eat, sleep, get nipped out and think.

Bridget has the right idea. For those of us facing more winter (as usual) it means cozy flannels. She doesn't look as if she'll be leaving that bedding anytime soon!

She has this whole sleeping-in-style thing going on, too! When not in soft sheets, then there's the cushy tushying of pillows, certainly a snooze made in heaven!

As for me, anything soft and horizontal is good enough for me, as long as my belly is full, I'm warm, and my dreams take me to lands where the wild nip grows...and Bridget leaves her usual sleeping perches to be by my side.

Just a few of our sleeping arrangements.

What are yours?

One happy snoozer,

~TOM~

Take A Deep Breath

Hi, friends!

I know - from the title of this piece, it can be nothing other than a pep talk for the week ahead.

How did we get into this mess? The housekeeper listens to this old guy on the radio every Friday afternoon and he plays music from the last hundred years. She likes him and the stuff he plays. He also reads the headlines from newspapers. Boy, things weren't that much better with conflicts brewing in Europe, then the Far East...it's always something!

Anyway, masking, distancing and vaccines should do the trick, if everything can just get on track!! Like we got through other challenging times, we'll get through this one.

Housekeeper: You're just full of words of wisdom for a cat who sleeps half the time.

Tom: It may look to you like sleep, but my brain is on rewind, ready to think positive!

Monday Morning Calm

 Hi, friends!

Around here we always get ready for the week on Sunday nights. The housekeeper says it's a carryover from days where she had to go elsewhere to work. I've kind of gotten into the habit, too. I think ahead, but really can't come up with that much since the weather pretty much tells me whether there'll be sun puddles, snow drifting down, or rain. I'm just a lazy boy without the lay-z-boy! I take each day as it comes and have gotten pretty good at reading Bridget, whether she's in a good mood or not.

So, instead of a bunch of photos, just wanted to share one - the bears and me, enjoying the peace of a morning, the calm of a new day, and contentment in anticipating the week ahead.

The same is wished for you all, too.

I'll leave you with these Monday musings.

Tom

Picking on Bridget & A Trashy Joke

 Hi, friends!

Okay, raise your paw if you think I pick on Bridget too much...

Okay now, raise your paw if you think she picks on me too much...

About even? Yeah, I'll go along with that.

The latest Bridget drama is her losing weight. She's not quite ready for the runway yet, but she's dropped quite a few ounces which in the cat world, as you know, is a big step. The housekeeper has noticed a sleeker profile and I have, too. It's not like with people. You can't disguise weight with fur, although she always has looked full-bodied fluffy.

It wasn't long ago we were blaming the camera.

Boy, didn't I have fun putting together this old pic below of Bridget as a gasbag or should I say bagpipe. Back then I got the worst grief!! She didn't meow to me for days, avoided me completely and bit me on the ears..but I recovered and so did she.

I'll have a pic of the new lean, mean meowing machine soon.

And this week, I'll leave you with a joke..

The trash truck arrives and the housekeeper runs out. She asks, "Am I late for the garbage?"

Their reply: "No, hop in!"

Cheers!

A Gentlemanly Mancat Monday

Hello, friends!

I know, Mondays are tough. What will the week bring? Naps? Sunpuddles? Extra treats? Snow?

I say we let our beautiful Penny and her latest round of photos get us ready. She seems to be more comfortable having her picture taken, and so the housekeeper brought out her camera, shared a sunpuddle with her, and the results are fabulous! I don't mind sharing my Monday with her. Penny really doesn't have as much of an online presence as Bridget and I do. We might hog the limelight a little too much.

So, here she is - enjoy!

Such a pretty ladycat! We're happy to have her as part of our family.

Bestest purrs,

Standoff!!

Hi, friends and a Happy New Year to you all!

It might be a new year and all, but some things just never change and never will.

In this instance, there's plenty of room at the window for both of us to share, but does it happen? Nope. If Bridget hops up first, there's no sharing. If I beat her to it, I usually am the gentleman and share.

You can just tell by this photo who arrived first (see my head hackles?!) Here I am, taking a stand...and so is she!! Hahaha...!

How did this end, you ask?

Me, on the floor, of course!

Like I said, some things never change. I'll try to be quicker on the draw next time and get to the window first!

Have a happy week, everybody 😊
