Notes from a parish cat and his author Julie Mackenzie

My photo
I am Father Tom Fish, esteemed member of the religious team at Temptation of Christ Parish in the novels by author Julie Mackenzie. As to my background, I was invited into the rectory as a stray, laid on the charm, and was invited to stay, even honorarily ordained and no less spiritual than my sidekick Father Will. He dotes on me to high heaven and forgives all of my street cat proclivities, whatever the hell that means.

Year's End

Ahhh..the end of 2012.

I had all kinds of resolutions at the beginning of the year, but I can't begin to remember them now.

Did I resolve to watch my weight? I did that--can't miss my furry bulges! That's as far as it went, though. Do they have a Curves for cats?

I'm not making any resolutions for 2013. I'm too tired. All I know is I'm going to be more vigilant like everybody else in this world, and probably do a heckuva lot more praying, just because.

I might start a garden.

To plant catnip and catmint and money tree seeds.

What a great garden it would be, especially at harvest time!

Ahhhh...

Happy New Year to you, my furriends!

'Twas A Kit-tery, Glittery Night

And we're all hunkered down
Ready for Christmas with nary a frown

"Let's not push it."

We have all our lights in place as you see
A hush from the grouping found under the tree

It's our Bethlehem nativity all whiskers and fur
For those of you new to robed kitties and myrrh

We're all happy to celebrate, no grudges to find
Anxious to show we are generous and kind

Shhhh...he's sleeping, let's not wake him yet

He'll be quite taken with us kitties, I'll sure wanna bet
We've brought catnip and feathers and carols to sing
And a cute little birdie, quite the glittery thing.

Anastasia and Mitty, Tinker, me Tom and the mom
Wishing you and yours the best ever from here and now on..

(OMC..we just noticed the poor sheep on the stairs..oopsie..)

MERRY CHRISTMAS WITH LOVE

We're Almost There!

My goodness, how fast the days have gone by!

There's only about a week left as we slide right into Christmas. Methinks we still might have some leftover turkey..no, just kidding..

We even started decorating early, putting sparkly and woodsy things around like a pine cone basket under the tree

Carousel horsies that just won't hang on. I can't understand why..hehe

Other ornaments, festive and feline

including a big, old nip sack! The kind Santa Cat would carry on his back, hehe! Furriends, if we got our paws on that, we would be pawtyin' well into the New Year!

And there's me..

ME??

Mom Julie said something about stringing a little garland on my whiskers..she's so silly.

My favorite Christmas decoration?

It's these two together...

You might recognize the infant Jesus from our cat nativity set. We never put him away last year, just kept him sleeping right on the shelf, sweet as can be. The Father Christmas with him is one of our favorite versions of the more traditional St. Nicholas.

We can't wait to see some of your holiday decorations!

Purrs Everlasting

Listen up, my kitty loved ones:

This post today is all about how much humans really need us.

I know we're pretty much just bundles of love anyway, good at eating, snoozing, wide-eyed innocence, and some of us are amazingly good at having things just the way we like 'em

and we have so much to teach humans about how to have fun.

We say what we want with a simple meow and most of all, we are really sensitive to sadness and tears, helping just by being there.

That's why humans love us so much. There's a joy we share underneath our whiskers and a concern we show when hearts are broken.

What's more--

There's something we have that humans don't, and they need it desperately. It works its magic and comforts the soul, something Tinker and I were talking about just the other day.

**purring**

Humans can't purr.

Nope.

They can't.

I couldn't believe the Big Puss didn't know that, the big dummy.

But, we can.

And that is the real gift we give those we love.

We share the world together
We share our souls apart
There's always caring
Always sharing
Whispers heart to heart

Purrs and love,
Tom, Mom Julie, Tinker, Mitty and Anastasia
