Notes from a parish cat and his author Julie Mackenzie

My photo
I am Father Tom Fish, esteemed member of the religious team at Temptation of Christ Parish in the novels by author Julie Mackenzie. As to my background, I was invited into the rectory as a stray, laid on the charm, and was invited to stay, even honorarily ordained and no less spiritual than my sidekick Father Will. He dotes on me to high heaven and forgives all of my street cat proclivities, whatever the hell that means.

The Art of the Snooze

Hi, friends and happy Monday..or just snooze and it'll be over quick!

When it comes to naps and snoozes, mine are pretty ordinary. It's what happens inside my head when I'm off to dreamland that makes all the difference. I have had more adventures while in the Land of Nod than anywhere else. And, that includes finding the extraterrestrial device lodged in the housekeeper's petunias last summer. It was a round disk smelling weird and killing the flowers around it.

Different snooze places give me different dreams. Like here, for instance. Want to know what I'm  dreaming about?

This!!! Just a few well-placed words antagonize me enough to erupt..in my dream, of course.

When I'm alone, I have better dreams

Like this one - writing plays and sonnets and such, appealing to cats, honoring my hero:

Or, I'm playing the best hand yet with a derringer in my pocket, just in case.

This is just a sampling of what I dream about. I can imagine myself doing just about anything a human can do - while I'm curled up on my pillow or stretched out on a windowsill in the sun.

Any dreams you want to talk about?

Happy dreams to you!

One dreamy kinda guy,
Tom

Thoughts on Easter and the Earth

Hi, guys!

Hope you had a good Easter. It is, paws down, the busiest church and rectory time ever. There's family, there are strangers although mostly relatives visiting regular parishioners and a few curiosity seekers. I have no idea what they might want. Maybe to be converted? Wait a minute..they're CAT LOVERS, of course, coming just to see me!!!!!

Anyway, the Lord has risen in all of His glory and I would have loved to have been a cat at his side when he first woke up!

Today is Earth Day and a great followup to yesterday's thoughts and prayers and I'm celebrating by taking a walk around, something I haven't had a chance to do. I'll be checking to make sure all the flowers are all right and the housekeeper hasn't killed anything yet.

Here's a thought: Earth Day is really special to us because we're so much a part of it, more than humans. I'll explain. We're part of it because we haven't done anything to change it, destroy it, or jeopardize its existence. I know - highfalutin' thoughts for a feline, but I truly believe this.

So, enjoy the day, my friends and the week ahead, remembering there are those who love the earth and respect it as much as we do.

All Hat AND Cattle!

Hey, guys!!

What a weekend I had! Remembering a couple of fantastic days does make it easier to take when Monday arrives, all soggy and wet.

I went to my first rodeo, what do you think of that?! Now, most of you kitties know that my adventures are imaginary ones, so when an old cowboy arrived at the rectory all decked out carrying tales of broncos, lassooos, and excitement, that really got me going! I started imagining a life on the range with cattle and practicing my roping and bronco-riding skills.

Even better - check this out! My new cowboy friend brought a pair of jeans cut just for me and a tag for my collar with a bull on it. I was thrilled!! I really got into the spirit of things and my imagination took off from there. Here I am in my own bronco-bustin' threads!!

So, maybe one of these days I WILL go to a real rodeo instead of just dressing up for one. I sure hope so! I'll have to take my plane and fly out to where they have a bunch of 'em while staying at my pal's ranch. I'll even drag along my fellow reverends, the housekeeper, and those who want to go - only if they promise to be good and remember not to walk behind a horse!

Now, for chow: I think the chuck wagon just arrived! Nothin' like workin' up an appetite!

Spiffed Up Furs!

Hello, efurrybody!!

Over the weekend, the housekeeper gave me a good brushing and with a comb got all the under chin furs and combed out around my ears. I love my grooming because - and here's a secret that I'll share - it means she takes off my collar and that feels sooo good, especially when she massages my lusciousness first, teehee!! Here's the secret, though: I "lose" my collar a lot because I'd rather have my neck free, especially after a good spoiling over my furs.

I know my "priestly attire" has to go back on eventually, but meanwhile...I'm enjoying my freedom! Come and get me!!

Have a good week, my friends! By the by, most of the responses I received on our fun destination where we would all go (in last week's post) has to have sun and sand. I couldn't agree more!

Up, Up and Away!!

Boo!!!!

That wasn't meant to scare you, it was in chorus with everybody else who's responding to that jerk in the back of the room who yelled, "Don't be ridiculous!!"

Taking umbrage..I always thought that word meant something to eat for breakfast..anyway, the man was scoffing at the thought that I would actually have my own plane. What's so ridiculous about that?
Here it is, Mr. Doubtful!!

It's my understanding that my plane will hold baggage and comfortably seat up to fifty kitties with a crew of ten for your every airborne need.

You are all invited, but first, you have to tell me your dream destination and if you're bringing your peeps. Once we all agree and the baggage is loaded, I'll tell the pilot. Niptinis all around for a special salud at the beginning of our trip. We'll be gone a week and there's plenty of food and snacks for everybody.

Don't forget, in your comments tell me your dream destination and I'll work out the rest..

Now back to our regularly scheduled program..
