Notes from a parish cat and his author Julie Mackenzie

My photo
I am Father Tom Fish, esteemed member of the religious team at Temptation of Christ Parish in the novels by author Julie Mackenzie. As to my background, I was invited into the rectory as a stray, laid on the charm, and was invited to stay, even honorarily ordained and no less spiritual than my sidekick Father Will. He dotes on me to high heaven and forgives all of my street cat proclivities, whatever the hell that means.

Windowsill Thoughts

Hi and welcome to my Mancat Monday post! (friends are always welcome - this is for people who may come around secretly...I DO have secret admirers, you know, hehe)

Windowsills and gazing out at the world is a great way to go through one's thoughts and ponder why things are the way they are.

Sometimes Bridget joins me in my ponderin'. Then she tells me to shut up. I just ignore her.

This here's been bugging me: Why do we say sunrise and sunset? The sun doesn't move. It's the earth doing all the heavy lifting, yet the sun gets credit and is the topic of poetry and descriptions in fanciful fiction. Oh, and songs...sunrise, sunset..sunrise, sunset..They keep repeating their wrongness!!

There are other things that bug me, but I won't go into those now. I love the sun, as all of us cats do, but the earth with all the trees, birds, and - let's not forget, mice - is pretty special, too.

Have a good week!

TOM & BRIDGET

Tom, what do you expect from silly, stupid humans?
Betcha the words sunrise and sunset were coined before we knew the Earth revolved around the sun, and all that.
Then, because it's a part of history and no one wants to change anything...that words just stuck.
Sorry, dude...humans are silly & stupid.

Don't worry. Things never stay the same as they are always changing. This too shall pass. The sun will continue to rise and set regardless.

I like your ponderings Tom! I never thought of that, it is the earth moving, not the sun - our Mother Earth should get more of the credit!

You are right, Tom. Now I think I will have to ponder that too.

You're very smart about the sun. We've enjoyed stargazing this week being able to see the comet, Saturn, and Jupiter.

The Earth has a lot of pull! Get it?

There's nothing wrong with pondering, Tom. Just don't let it get in the way of you enjoying the good stuff (like the sun)!
