Notes from a parish cat and his author Julie Mackenzie

My photo
I am Father Tom Fish, esteemed member of the religious team at Temptation of Christ Parish in the novels by author Julie Mackenzie. As to my background, I was invited into the rectory as a stray, laid on the charm, and was invited to stay, even honorarily ordained and no less spiritual than my sidekick Father Will. He dotes on me to high heaven and forgives all of my street cat proclivities, whatever the hell that means.

Here's our card. Lots of love to all!

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and All Celebrations in Between!

Hi, everybody!

A very special holiday is wished for all who read my bloggie. I'm determined to make the New Year better in every way..more mice for me and you! More catnip, too! And, blessings..we don't want to forget Who's in charge..

From mom Julie: In the spirit of Christmas, I just want to share that it's been hard for us to blog. (I'm adding this paragraph after Tom's signing below). All of the old blogs signed by Tom I looked at just these past few days. Call me a sentimental old fool, but realizing he was gone all over again brought me to tears. Even though he has become the character in my books, it still doesn't fill that emptiness that he left behind. Each one of us does whatever it takes to cope with our loves, our losses and what life throws at us day to day. My offering to you is my creativity and stories that feature his clerical, feline lusciousness :) . I hope you enjoy..especially since they're so inexpensive..Tom would never want to be referred to as "cheap." Enjoy..okay, Tom, back to you:

Tom here: If you have a Kindle or might get one for Christmas, here are a couple of options for you..books I came out with this past year. Easy, fun reads and I'm in them almost on every page!!

Mom Julie put them on holiday special for 99 cents until after Christmas. Feather was first for the bargain price, so I think that ends Christmas Day..but Dog Tags runs a little longer.

Be good, good friends. Hope Santa brings you lots of treats and all good things for your human family. Know you are loved.

~Tom

Catching Up!

Hi, everybody!!

It's been so long..how's the family? Oh, really? No, I wouldn't believe it. He did? She said what?
Get out!

Okay, then. It's been nuts around here. The housekeeper has been in a stupor for a couple of months. I would say coma, but then, who would feed me? My pillow at the rectory window is in sore need of fluffing. My diet has stagnated..time to fetch a mouse and drop it mangled at a certain person's feet to get my point across..my adventures are, for the most part, going unnoticed.

This cannot continue.

Actually, it hasn't. Right now, our books are on Kindle and on whatever other device one wants to use to read my stuff..

Being written now is Book 3 of the Tom Fishworthy series..called RETREAT. It's time Father Jack took a break after suffering a heart attack in Book 2 - DOG TAGS. That's all we can say for now..stay tuned!

Here's a sneak peek at the cover we might use..some clues as to where Jack's going. Sshhh..but don't tell!

Have a wonderful holiday season, friends. It's good to catch up!

The Luckiest Cat in the World

Hi, Tom here..

Am I the luckiest cat? You bet!

Here's why:

I have a whole series of books devoted to me and my big mouth. Everything I say
and do is sacred. Even my ego has been sanctified.

I started out on the streets, wound up at a parish rectory and they made
me a priest. I heard another cat wound up at a convent and they turned her into
a nun..but that's another story.

I know some pretty special people - Father Will. Okay here's my take. Great eye candy, likes things just so. If he were at the pearly gates right now, he'd be polishing them.

Father Jack. Great old guy. White mustache, looks like St. Peter or a philosopher.
I don't think he'd mind posing a toast to the Man upstairs with the apostles gathered
'round.

Mary Lou - Housekeeper who would purr if she could. Her cracks are almost as
good as mine.

Patsy Gubbers - Poor soul. Talks both to her dead husband and dead cat. Vinny,
now there was a cat who could catch mice and never say he's sorry.

That's just the beginning, folks. Oh, there's Anastasia, too. Tiny whisp of a thing.
I'm positive she has fairy wings. After all, she has pink hair and the longest
fingernails *sigh*

FEATHER, my first book, just received an incredible review and that's another
reason I'm lucky.  Here it is: http://www.mochasmysteriesmeows.com

On Amazon Kindle: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F3U8R4C Check it out!

Have to run. Someone's scratching at the back door..

Yes, Humans Purr, Too

"Who knows where the time goes.." is a popular refrain from an old Judy Collins song. I just checked and I realized I hadn't written in here since March. Hark! Not acceptable!

This post isn't so much about the kitties. They're doing fine, but the preparations for summer, trees now completely leafed out and critters in adorable abundance. It's a happy time of year where the fun is more celebratory, even if you don't take part. You watch, remembering how in the not so distant past, you grabbed the gusto and never wanted to let go.

And you didn't. The gusto has aged along with you. It goes a little deeper. It's more expectant of quality. It dislikes b.s. with a passion and delusion with an insane desire to scream.

Somehow, I feel the cats have known this all along. Their acceptance of the simple things a clear indication of how important those things are. Sunlight streaming through a window, a toy to chase and the contentment of enjoying things in the moment, when nothing else matters.

And to be kept, either tangibly or in spirit.

Fed, spoiled, catered to with treats, laughter and soft pillows, purring with happiness, knowing full well that life should be lived no other way.

Bridgelet - The Youngest In Our Family

Happy Gotcha Day, little Bridget!

That was the name we all gave you when you came into our lives. Now, you answer to Bridgie, Bridgelet, and Bridgie-poo, especially when mommy chirps!

Who knew when we rescued you from a place where people took their garbage, dumped their leaves  and where you were loved by a little old man in a little one-room house that you would be such a charmer?

Who always knows her place.
The adults get hissy, you steer clear and let it pass.

"Tinker gets cranky sometimes. Probably his arthritis."

Always wants to play.
I have a feeling the kitten in you will remain well into adulthood.

"Having fun with my big brother Chopin!"

Has a good appetite.
You have always enjoyed a good meal, even from others' plates!

"Mmmm. I say, that sure looks good!"

And, you listen.
You know what "no" means and that keeps you out of trouble.

Uh-oh.

We love you, our brightly-furred little one! And, honestly, when the oldsters are sound asleep,
you know you can find fun with Chopin. He, especially, is happy you're here.

~And so are we!

Love,
Mom Julie, Tinker, Anastasia, and Chopin (and Tom)

We Like to Reminisce

Back -- way back - there was a poetry contest.

People attending a writer's conference in Pittsburgh were invited to post their poems on a bulletin board. They would all be judged and the winner announced the last day.

Mom Julie, on a whim--so glad she took the subject matter seriously--posted what I've shared below.

It won first prize. Excited and happy, she brought home no money, just a certificate and the first introduction to my life.

Sometimes I can be an embarrassment with what I do or say. Usually, though, I make her proud since I'm just so adorable, she can't stand it.

Be good and say your prayers.

Sin-cerely,

~Tom the Parish Cat
